Flying with low-cost airlines? Avoid paying additional fees!
Low-cost airlines usually offer the cheapest airfares to the various destinations. However, the price of the air ticket is often not the final one. Read on and find out more information about these fares and learn how to avoid paying additional fees and keep the price of your air ticket down.
The first reason why the ticket prices of the low-cost airlines are so low is that they do not include any checked baggage. You can carry one piece of cabin baggage with restricted dimensions. The average size of allowed hand baggage is 115 linear centimetres and 8–10 kg in weight. Wizz Air is even stricter, the dimensions of your cabin baggage must not exceed 42×32×25 cm, otherwise you will pay €10 – €30 for it.
The fees per checked baggage tend to be high. When flying with Ryanair, you will pay €15 – €30 per 15 kg bag per flight. If you plan to travel with weighty baggage, consider flying with full-service carriers with checked baggage included in the ticket price.

Low-cost airlines often fly to the secondary airports as it is cheaper for them. However, these airports are usually far from the city centres and it can be quite costly to get there. For example, Ryanair flies to Paris-Beauvais or to Brussels-Charleroi which are 90 and 70 kilometres away from the cities. Passengers will pay about €30 for the tickets to and from the city centres.

Furthermore, there are other fees that can make the price of your air ticket higher. Many low-cost airlines automatically offer insurance while booking online. You have to uncheck this option if you don’t want to pay extra money. Also, it is usually more costly to pay with a credit card. You can simply avoid this fee by paying with a debit card.
In addition, some low-cost carriers charge check-in but you can find a flight with online check-in. This service is usually for free. When flying with low-cost airlines, don’t forget to print out your boarding pass. Ryanair´s fee for the re-issuing of the flight ticket is €70 at the airport. Remember that there is no complimentary meal and drink service onboard low-cost airlines. Double-check all the information when booking your flight because it is quite expensive to change your reservation.
When searching for the best available flight to your desired destination, always check more options. Consider the checked baggage fees, distance from the city centre and other fees and the final price of your trip won’t take you by surprise.
